DHL Stormers Retain the Cup
Congratulations to the DHL Stormers for last night winning the Rock Cup in the u-mee Super IV League for the second consecutive season, in a hugely entertaining game with a nail biting finish.
They had to work hard for it against the Inline Framing Sharks, holding out in the end to win the game by five points – 43 to 38. Each time the Stormers scored, the Sharks came back, and it was a reflection of the closeness of the game that we went into half time with the scores level at 17-17. Both teams kept the pace going in the second half with further tries cancelling each other out, and both also being awarded penalty tries. As extra time loomed, despite strong vocal advice to the contrary from the touchline, both teams turned down kickable penalties, seeking that killer score. But it wasn’t until the last minute, however, with the clock ticking, that the Stormers snatched the try that was to prove the winner.
Remarkably, until that last minute score, all the Stormers points had come from only two players, Shay McDonnell and Jack Ecclestone and I’m sure McDonnell will regale you with how he scored his hat trick of tries. Well done to both.
Thank you to the DHL Stormers and Inline Framing Sharks players, managers and coaches for putting on a great game to finish the u-mee Super IV season. And of course, the game wouldn’t have gone ahead without our match officials, and a big thank you goes to Andy Blackburn, James Russo and Bekki Rikey.
All to play for next season!
