Rugby in Gibraltar is booming with children from as young as 4 having their first experience with a rugby ball. Our Technical Director (Dave Barley) has been tasked with developing rugby in the local schools as well as developing players and coaches.
Gibraltar Rugby believe qualified and organised coaching is a fundamental part of the Union. We believe in constant coach education, for all areas of the Union. We provide both internal and external coaching qualifications, with help from local organisations and international charities such as the Penguins.
The Gibraltar Rugby’s Coach & Referee education programmes are set up to support, educate and up skill coaches and match officials. The aims of the project are:

The ‘Player Give Back Scheme’ is an initiative that allows National Squad players to earn credits that can be redeemed towards the cost of international fixtures and tours. The scheme is centred on the National Squad volunteering their time to participate in events that will benefit and strengthen the Union, in return for the credits.
Examples of events that players can attend include – After School Rugby Club, Junior Training Sessions, Summer and School Holiday Camps, with the National Squad players coaching younger age groups and being a physical representation of the attainable goals the junior players can aspire to achieve. Players can also officiate in the internal league, giving back their time to allow other players to enjoy the competitive side of the sport.
Gibraltar Rugby sees the ‘Player Give Back Scheme’ as a sustainable way of gaining the relevant support for the GRFU’s community sections from the National Squad members.
Each year Gibraltar Rugby hold the annual Skyfire Corporate Touch Rugby Challenge Cup. Over 5 to 7 weeks of action-packed corporate touch rugby held at Victoria Stadium between Gibraltar’s leading businesses and organisations.
